Tattoo Tuesday- Happy Birthday To Me

owl tattoo

Hey, it’s tattoo tuesday – Happy Birthday to me! Today is my 38th birthday. Gulp. I am 2 very short years away from the big 4-Oh and plan on enjoying every second. I don’t dread turning 40, in fact, I welcome it. I’ve been loving the happiness I get from my blog and the people I’ve met since starting it. I’ve been working ‘pretty’ regularly for almost a year now, albeit for different clients. I’m brave and I’m learning to be more bold. Yup, so far this road to 40 thing is looking pretty awesome.

This year, my birthday present to myself is a brand new tattoo!

I’ve been training myself that it’s important to choose to grab an opportunity when it presents itself and see where it takes you. A prime example, it was well after midnight on Sunday last week and I was laying in bed, unable to sleep. I grabbed my phone and decided to scroll thru Instagram to help quiet my noisy brain. I came to a picture from Hilary Cooper, tattooer extraordinaire, saying that her Tuesday client canceled and she suddenly had a large block of time available during the day. My stomach jumped and I quickly commented that I was interested and would email her the following morning. If you know me, you know that I’m have very discerning tastes when it comes to who I get tattoos from. I will seek out the best artists both locally and while I’m traveling. Well, Hilary Cooper is one of those artists that for years, has been on my list of locals but up until that moment was near impossible to get an appointment with.

Picking my design was easy because I have a continuous list of ideas for tattoos that I keep on Pinterest. After 1 quick email exchange, I was booked for Tuesday at 2pm.

A quick 2 hours later and my owl, Fluffy, was born. People ask me why I picked an owl? Here’s why. Owls are nocturnal birds of prey. They’re always around but are rarely seen. My owl sits on my shoulder to protect me as I sleep and to watch my back during the day. And also just because he’s so darn pretty. 🙂

Hilary Cooper has opened a brand new shop in Calgary along with Mike Peace and Bret Pease. Check them out at Parlour Tattoo Shop. She’s taking appointments now and bonus, you won’t have to wait a year to get in.

Well this is us:) pop in and say hi some time;)

I love Fluffy! For my 50th (ah!) birthday, Hilary put an osprey on my shoulder. Why an osprey? My birthday was also the ‘book birthday’ of my first children’s book – about ospreys, of course!

And now I need to talk to Hilary again, to add a salamander and a bat for the next two books, due out soon. I’ll have the whole food chain on my back!

Awesome! Hilary is amazing. I got an owl because they’re nocturnal and I wanted something to watch over me at night. And I love owls. You should tweet me with a pic of your “hilary” art. I’d love to see it. Thanks for visiting!

Tattoos are great. It is all about keeping a really good tattoo artist though.
