Survival Kit – Talking to my tweens about periods

I feel like I’m on a roller coaster slowly trudging up the first steep hill in a rickety little, one person car. It’s scary going up that hill. I don’t know what the top will be like or how long the ride will last or whether I’ll be terrified and close my eyes the whole time or if I will scream with glee and throw my hands up in the air in excitement. Yeah, that’s how I would sum up how I feel about the pending pubescent changes my 2 oldest daughters are about to embark on.

My babies have vanished and replaced with my little women. Gulp. It’s time to talk to my tweens about, don, don, don, periods.

Deep breaths ladies and gents. If you’re a parent of a girl or like me, 4 of them, then, yeah, we’re on this ride together, lets do this!

Here goes…Yes, I am a mother and yes, eventually I have to talk to my daughters about their changing bodies, including tampons and pads. And to be honest, if there’s one thing I have lots of expertise on, it’s periods.

In order to make the upcoming discussion a non scary, educational and exciting event, I’ve put together a care package or survival kit for them so not only are they prepared but they will have hands on examples of what they need and how to use it.

Tween First Period Survival Kit includes:

Water bottle – stay hydrated, eat healthy, take care of your body

Hot compress – to help ease cramping, you’re not sick and yes, the pain will go away

Runners – go for a walk, a bike ride or go for a hike but like with everything, be prepared and carry the supplies you’ll need

Playtex® Sport® combo pack – try a variety of different products in one box and find what works for you and your comfort

Stuffie – get lots of sleep, get lots of hugs, ask lots of questions, don’t be afraid, all your friends are going thru the same thing. I’m always here for you to talk to.

Book/magazine – for those moments you just need some quiet time to yourself

I find it way easier to talk to my kids with props or visuals whether it’s a book about where babies come from or it’s a box of tampons and panty liners, it keeps the conversation going and gives me a list of topics to cover. I encourage you to put together a “survival” kit for your daughter so that both of you are ready when they need it. And trust me, it’s a way easier discussion to have than explaining why mommy and daddy’s door was locked last night 😉

Also, this summer, Playtex® Sport® is celebrating young women across Canada with an Instagram contest that asks girls to show how they Play On™. For additional information, follow along on Instagram at @PlayOnCanada and visit www.PlaytexPlayOn.ca.

So tell me, what would you put in your tween survival kit?
