Summer Art Party

Mommmmmm, I’m bored.

mom, Mom, MOm, MOM! Can you play with me?

Mom, lets go to the mall.

Mom, can you take us for ice cream?

Mom, we want to go to the movies.

Hey mom, why are you locked in your room alone?

Are you crying?

Doh Vinci

Yup, it’s 6 weeks into summer break and I’m looking for my summer sanity because clearly the novelty of riding bikes up and down the street, playing tag in the yard and walking to the mailbox to check the mail for mommy has vanished along with my patience. I am absolutely ready for them to go back to school. Why oh why didn’t I put them in more summer camps? Oh right, I remember, they cost as much as a trip to Hawaii.

Desperate to give my kids something constructive and creative to do that wasn’t parking them in front of a screen but that also lets a lazy parent like me, walk away while they play, I set up a Doh Vinci summer art party for my girls and a few of their friends. Yes, I’m all about spreading the love around and if I’m going to entertain my own kids then I might as well entertain yours. Why yes, I am in the running for both mom-of-the-year and friend-of-the-year.

The girls gathered around the table and with minimal instruction (lets face it, kids are way smarter than we were, they can lock down my phone in 5 seconds flat) they jumped right in and the creativity started pouring out. Creating their 3D designs was super easy; pick a colour, pop it in the applicator and squeeze out your wildest dreams.

I was impressed by the beautiful designs they were coming up with and although I selfishly wanted to set them up and then walk away to sit with a tall glass of ice tea on the deck, I was buzzing around them wanting to try it myself. Oh don’t you judge me, I know you’ve been left sitting at the table long after your kids have wandered off leaving you playing with their play doh. No? Just me then?

My summer art party was a total success. After the girls 3D-ecorated each of the pieces on the table they had snacks and in a flash, it was time to go home, the day was over. And not once did I hear, mom, I’m bored!

And I’m happy to say that the snacks made more of a mess than the Doh Vinci art, in fact the brightly coloured table cloth I used to “protect” the table was a total waste of $0.99.  I’ll take the mess of strawberry tops and cucumber peels over crafting mess any day.

The kids were super excited that they got to keep their very own Doh Vinci applicator and extra colour packs and with all the great inspiration available on the Doh Vinci YouTube channel, they should be kept busy right thru till September! (fingers crossed)

ok those are so cool. Its like a colorful glue gun. Does it come out of the gun thing hot? Does it dry quickly? My kids are driving me crazy, and this is something I think we would all enjoy!

    • Tiffany says:

Ha, you’re right Brooke, it does look like a glue gun but nope the doh comes out room temp. There are no batteries required and no heat involved and if they put a line down they don’t like they can just wipe it away with a finger. Once the art piece is done it will dry in place overnight depended on how thick the doh is. My girls came home and decorated a vase and it’s perfectly in place still.

My four-year-old is driving me crazy with his boredom too! He would love this craft because it looks like an icing gun and he has been begging for an icing gun to decorate a cake. Is there a suggested age for use?

    • Tiffany says:

Oh it would super fun to draw a cake on a page of construction paper and then decorate the cake with Doh Vinci!! Great idea! The suggested age of use says 6 and up. It does take some hand strength to squeeze the applicator.

Looks like so much fun! I like the mason jar idea.
