Our Valentines Story

When we started dating, I told him that I was not at all into Valentines day, this is our Valentines story.

I don’t need a day with over priced roses and chocolates and a dinner out with all the other couples who want to declare their love at a noisy, crowded restaurant. I never did. I want romance on a random day when I will least expect it. Take the kids to Nana’s house on a Friday after school and drop them off. Put together an overnight bag for the 2 of us and tell me to grab my purse and lets go. Drive me out to a quiet little bed and breakfast in the mountains and lets stay up late watching movies, eating popcorn in bed and making love. In the morning, we’ll sit in the hot tub looking at the view and maybe take in some small town wandering.

That’s my kind of romance.

So after we started dating, I told him that he was off the hook for all the pressure that Valentines day holds for men.

Phew, what a relief for him.

So what does he go and do?

He sets up a dinner for 2 at a trendy downtown restaurant with reservations at 7. We both get home from work and I’m tired, cranky (probably PMS’ing) and on the verge of h-angry (hungry-angry) and he jumps in the shower to get ready to go out. After grumbling and complaining that I didn’t want to go and muttering something under my breath about hating Valentines day, he pokes his head out of the shower and says, “well, honey, we don’t have to go out if you don’t want to”.

heavy sigh.

No, it’s fine. Lets go already.

We get to the restaurant and as we are seated, there’s a bouquet of flowers on the table and I begin (finally) to soften my general annoyance with the entire day.

The bread basket comes.

We eat.

We talk.

We laugh.

He keeps looking at the bread basket.

I take another slice of warm bread and find a small box hidden beneath it.

(gasp)

He takes the ring out of the box and comes around to my side of the table and gets down on 1 knee.

That was 14 years ago, today.

I still hate Valentines day but now, thanks to my sneaky husband, he renamed this day to forever be our engagement anniversary day.

Happy engagement anniversary day to you all. I hope you are with the one you love.

XOXO
